What an ATS score means for a fresher
A fresher may receive a lower match score when a job description expects several years of experience. That does not automatically mean the resume is poor. It may mean the role is not truly entry level, or that relevant project and internship evidence is not described clearly.
Use the score to identify what can be improved honestly. You can improve missing keywords that reflect real skills. You cannot solve a requirement for three years of production experience by changing wording.
Find the experience you already have
Freshers often have more usable evidence than they realize. Review internships, academic projects, freelance work, volunteer work, hackathons, labs, certifications, and responsibilities in student organizations. The key is to connect that work to the role.
- A final-year project can demonstrate problem solving, collaboration, and tools.
- An internship can show exposure to real workflows and deadlines.
- A certification project can show practical application, not just course completion.
- Volunteer work can demonstrate communication, analysis, or coordination.
Write projects like professional evidence
Do not stop at “Created an e-commerce website.” Explain the problem, your contribution, the technology, and the result.
Weak: Made a sales dashboard using Power BI.
Stronger: Built a Power BI sales dashboard from 50,000 transaction rows, created DAX measures for revenue and retention, and reduced weekly reporting preparation from two hours to 20 minutes in a simulated business case.
Only use numbers that are real or clearly identified as part of the project dataset or exercise.
Choose skills that the role actually needs
A long skills list does not compensate for missing evidence. Select the tools and methods relevant to the target job, then demonstrate them in projects or internships. A software engineering fresher might include programming languages, frameworks, databases, testing, Git, and deployment. A data analyst fresher might emphasize SQL, spreadsheets, BI tools, statistics, data cleaning, and visualization.
Use the job-description keyword method to prioritize terms. Remove unrelated skills that distract from the role.
A practical fresher revision plan
- Choose one realistic entry-level job.
- List the top eight to twelve skills or responsibilities in the description.
- Match each requirement to a project, internship, course, or truthful skill.
- Rewrite the strongest evidence as short achievement bullets.
- Place the most relevant skills and projects near the top.
- Run the resume through the ATS resume checker.
- Review the gaps and decide which require editing and which require learning.
A strong fresher resume is specific, honest, and focused. It does not pretend to have senior experience; it makes entry-level potential easy to understand.
