Match the type of data analyst role
Data analyst roles vary by domain and responsibility. A business intelligence role may focus on dashboards, data models, and stakeholder reporting. A product analyst role may emphasize funnels, experimentation, retention, and event data. An operations analyst may prioritize forecasting, process metrics, and automation.
Read the job description carefully and reflect the same domain language when your background supports it.
Prioritize the analysis workflow
A useful skills section may cover querying, spreadsheets, visualization, programming, statistics, data quality, and communication. Common tools include SQL, Excel, Power BI, Tableau, Python, and R, but the required combination depends on the role.
Do not list “data analysis” as a standalone claim. Prove how you cleaned data, defined metrics, built reports, found patterns, or supported decisions.
Write bullets with business context and results
Weak: Created dashboards for management.
Stronger: Built a Power BI operations dashboard using SQL data from 14 branches, automated weekly KPI reporting, and reduced manual preparation by six hours per week.
Useful outcomes include time saved, reporting accuracy, forecast error, revenue opportunity, conversion, retention, inventory, service levels, and adoption. Explain the metric clearly enough that a non-technical reviewer can understand why the work mattered.
Present portfolio projects as real analysis
A strong project includes a business question, dataset, cleaning steps, method, findings, limitations, and recommendation. Avoid presenting only a screenshot of a dashboard. Explain what decision the work supports.
- State where the data came from and whether it was public or simulated.
- Describe how missing values, duplicates, and outliers were handled.
- Show the SQL, spreadsheet, Python, or R work performed.
- Summarize the insight and its practical meaning.
- Do not claim a business result that was never implemented.
